Value of using the correct reference is the individual contribution to work performance of a single usage of a reference to:

• achieve consistency of work outcome,
• enable the ability to self control one’s work,
• mobilize the state of the art of a reference.

Loss due to errors stemming from ignorance is the cost incurred when a worker:

• does not verify their reference at all,  or
• verifies their reference against a non-authoritative source (use a google search or goes to wikipedia,  etc..) whose relevance is unknown with regards to the level of quality expected in work.

This loss includes the cost for detecting as well as the cost for correcting such errors.

Loss due to errors in reference is the cost incurred when a worker:

• accesses one reference after the other and makes a mistake in building the necessary triangulation among sources and summarizing the context to perform the analysis yielding the correct reference for the task at hand, or
• tries to access a source of reference that cannot be accessed (no access channel, no password, no client application, etc..)
• hits a reference that contains errors (obsolete, data entry error, error that cannot be/does not get corrected, etc..)
